Arcade Block Review: January 2015

My Arcade Block for January didn’t arrive until February this time, but that’s alright. The late shipment does not take away from how impressively awesome this month’s block truly is. There is honestly something for everyone in this block and even my kid loved it, mainly because she loves Plants vs. Zombies. However, sadly this box did have an item I had already owned — so it was kind of like getting the same gift for Christmas from two different people (albeit, still an awesome gift).

So, let’s get started.

SEGA Genesis Pins

The first item I pulled out of my Block this month was this snazzy set of SEGA Genesis pins. I loved my SEGA Genesis growing up, so this set of pins was a welcomed surprise. I was definitely a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and Earthworm Jim, so those two pins I’m a fan of more than the other two. However, anyone who collects and shows off pins will gladly bring these bad boys into their collection. Personally, I’m not a big pin guy and that means I likely won’t use these, but I definitely see the appeal for those that are. Yes, this is likely the first “miss” for me out of all of my Arcade Blocks thus far.

Tetris Notebook

Sadly, I already owned this exact notebook. However, with it being a notebook, that means you may just need a second one once the other is filled up. With that in mind, that makes this a great item to receive because I absolutely love it. The pages are colorful (Tetris piece colors) and while I do wish it was a tad bigger, it does help me write down my FIFA 15 transfer strategies (haha). If you don’t own one of these and are looking for a notepad like it’s 1997; I definitely recommend it.

Gaming Stickers

These may seem like a throw-in item, but they’re actually my favorite part about this Block. Crazy, right? I love stickers and when they’re gaming related, that’s even better. This sheet of stickers features some of gaming’s most iconic figures makes it look like Sackboy may have come down with a case of the rabies. Seriously, though, these stickers are extremely high quality and they won’t wear off like other cheap brands.

Plants vs. Zombies Graphic Novel

Oddly enough, this was my daughter’s favorite item we got. She has a weird love for the PvZ franchise and that’s fine with me. She’s also at that age where comic books and graphic novels are interesting to her because there are lots of pictures despite all of the words. Hopefully she continues to love books like this because they’re great. This particular novel isn’t shabby. It’s a decent length, the artwork is fantastic, and considering it came in a $20 Arcade Block and likely retails for $10 itself, it’s a surprising addition.

Halo Mega Blocks

How awesome is this item, right? When you take into account everything we’ve shown so far and then realize there is also a T-Shirt to come below, can you even believe they also included this Halo Mega Blocks item in the Arcade Block too? The value of the January block is simply absurd and I can’t believe I scored it all for such a low price. It’s almost like I hit up a garage sale and landed these items on the cheap. This Mega Blocks set is great and it will look good beside my PixelBlock Blanka piece I got in a previous month’s block.

Donkey Kong T-Shirt

As always, my significant other landed yet another sweet t-shirt to add to her growing collection of gaming shirts. Part of the reason she lets me subscribe to this box each month is because she ends up with an awesome t-shirt each time. This Donkey Kong inspired design is not only clever, but very soft in terms of quality. It’s probably my second favorite shirt we’ve gotten through the Arcade Block’s so far.

Final Verdict?

Will I continue to subscribe? Obviously. The value you get each month from an Arcade Block is hard to top. Sure, it’s a bunch of random items I can’t control, but some of these things I wouldn’t even know existed if it weren’t for the Arcade Block. I recommend everyone to check them out at least once.
